The Great Demographic Divide: South Agings Fast While North Drives Youth Dividend

The Statistical Anomaly

Almost all Southern and Western states have fallen far below replacement level fertility (TFR 2.1), facing rapidly growing senior dependency ratios similar to East Asia.

In stark contrast, large northern states including Bihar (3.0) and Uttar Pradesh (2.4) continue to produce a substantial demographic dividend that will peak after 2035.

Internal migration from northern youth corridors to southern industrial and elderly-care hubs has become a defining structural reality of the Indian labor market.
